Origin of Nachos

No wonder nachos come from Mexico. The exact origin is a small town in northern Mexico called Piedras Negras. The town is just over the border from Eagle Pass, Texas. Restaurant owner Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya invented the delicious dish in 1943. Surprisingly, he invented nachos for Americans!

As the story goes, Ignacio had to conjure up fast food for some American military wives while they were in town. He quickly fried some tortillas and topped them with warm cheese and jalapeños. When asked what to call the dish, Ignacio replied, “Nacho's special.”

Nachos became a hit in Texas and then spread throughout the southwestern United States. In the 1970s, the popularity of nachos increased when the Texas Rangers baseball team began selling them at Arlington Stadium. Today, stadiums, restaurants and pubs around the world serve nachos to their patrons.

Some countries even have their own special version of nachos. In Jamaica, they serve nachos with pork. Greeks replaced tortilla chips with pita chips and topped them with feta cheese, cucumber, red onion and tzatziki sauce. Indian nachos can be made with toasted naan bread and topped with curry and mozzarella cheese.
